Frequently Asked Questions

We are always open to new partnerships with locally led NGOs. However, we also want to ensure we manage our capacity effectively and don’t grow too big too fast. If you’re interested in working with us, reach out via email to discuss potential collaboration and see if we’re a good fit for each other.

We work primarily with small to medium-sized NGOs in our targeted countries. Occasionally, we partner with larger organisations if there is a strong reason to do so. We identify partners through a variety of methods, including recommendations from trusted contacts in the country and, at times, open calls for applications. Once we identify potential partners, we refine our selection through an internal assessment process to ensure alignment with our mission and values.

If you have a large amount of funding, we may be able to set up a standalone project based on your preferences. For smaller donations, we work with you to integrate your contribution into our existing programmes to ensure the funds have maximum impact. Drop us a line, and we’d be happy to discuss the best way to allocate your donation.

No. Local NGOs typically operate with much lower overhead costs than international organisations. At Start Local, we ensure that the majority of donations go directly to crisis response. Some overhead is necessary for operational sustainability, but we maintain full transparency on how funds are used. We try to help Local NGOs bridge the gap to show their spending is compliant whilst removing a lot of the administrative burdens they face, meaning more transparency on their costs but without the huge additional costs that this often brings.

We currently operate in Gaza and are looking to expand to Syria. We are also open to working in other crisis-affected areas if funding becomes available. Our model is designed to be adaptable, allowing us to support local responders wherever there is an urgent need.

Not really. Our model is much more cost-effective than traditional INGOs who are now looking more towards local partnerships but who often have large headquarters and high administrative costs. Start Local is lean and focused, ensuring that as much funding as possible goes directly to locally led responses. Rather than adding extra layers of cost, we streamline the process and make it easier for donors to reach frontline responders efficiently.

Start Local is designed to get funding directly to local organisations—the people who know their communities best. Many local NGOs struggle to access international funding due to complex bureaucratic requirements. We bridge that gap, providing funding, capacity support, and advocacy to ensure local responders can lead in crises. Our model is cost-effective, flexible, and focused on impact, helping donors and partners make a real difference where it matters most.
